Pasadena (CA) seeks to tax telecom services: Measure D

The politicians and special interest groups that feed off of government largess in Pasadena want to tax the communications products that consumers have come to depend on like mobile phones, wireless text messaging, and possibly even the internet. These types of communications were not previously taxable, which is why the tax-hungry politicians want to find new ways to grab money from taxpayers’ wallets.

The ballot initiative, Measure D, is described by its proponents as a “modernization” of an existing tax. This is misleading because the proposal would reinstate a tax that has been invalidated by the elimination of the federal excise tax. Advocates of Measure D use “modernize” as a code word for creating a new revenue stream to grow government. And since Pasadena has enjoyed a $150 million surplus over the last decade, this new tax hike scheme is completely unnecessary.
